Anyone who has read Robert MacFarlane’s The Wild Places and will know how important the Beechwoods near Cambridge are to him, though they are perhaps only wild set against the surrounding golf course and agri desert. But they are a refuge. At the start of a difficult day recently I took an hour off to wander through them with a camera loaded with film. The slow photography in the peace of the woods with their whispering beeches put things into perspective.
