In the coming week the five main terrestrial TV channels will show over 26 hours of programmes devoted to antiques and ‘collectables’. What drives this anodyne output? For the programme makers, the comparatively low production costs is an attraction. For the viewers, a mixture of nostalgia, the urge to collect and the excitement of the hunt for a bargain or unexpected riches. Some argue that ‘collectables’ are the adult equivalent of a comfort blanket or cuddly toy.
