Fenscape 7

bottisham-lock-161020-1A flight of grey lag geese wheels noisily overhead; eight gothic cormorants take off in fright from the Cam.  Early morning walks reveal the delights of a waking world.  Kingfishers skim gaudily over the water, swans are serene and chattering grebes bob and dive.  Mixed corvid flocks are wake and head noisily out in search of food; snipe explode out of dykes in fast erratic flight.  Roe deer stand alert on the misty stubble; fresh earth by badger setts betrays night-time activity.  Reeds whisper in the wind; the grass in untrodden and dew soaks the boots.

bottisham-lock-161020-2Human life is on the move.  Near Landbeach the pervasive hum of traffic; at Bottisham Lock the clatter of a train on the track to Ely.  Tractors growl across the fields; boats chug slowly along the rivers, mere sounds in the mist; and a plane drones high overhear etching silver lines in the sky.  Dog walkers are diminished under in the flatness; the scale of the Fens shrinks all human activity.

bottisham-lock-161020-3Misty days, sunny dawns, rain and overcast; the fenscape changes day by day in a succession of images that debunk the myth of the boring Fens. The great skies have the drama of mountains and are ever new.  The sun rises early bringing hope and expectation for the day ahead.

New sights and places explored, new experiences since mid-August.
