I said in Fenscape 7 that ‘the scale of the Fens shrinks all human activity’. There is an internal contradiction in this: the Fens are an entirely artificial landscape created by the ingenuity of drainage engineers and farmers over several centuries. It is really only human beings as individuals that are shrunk under the towering sky.

The apparent emptiness is emphasised by the timing of these walks round the Fen edge – most people are still in bed, having breakfast or on their way to work. But it’s also about looking and not always being drawn to the wonders of the sky. In future I shall make more effort to populate, animate these fenscapes.
