Lode Enigma

Lode, Cambridgeshire 160127This building on Lode High Street drew my attention for two reasons.
First, it is an attractive and harmonious part of the village scene. Only two storeys, it stands out because of its unusual six-bay frontage, the nicely proportioned round arch windows and door and the decorated ridge to the slate roof. What looks like a former shop front has beautifully proportioned windows in five panels with segmented arch tops, and the recessed door turns the cleverly turns the corner. It needs only some careful conservation to bring out its full qualities.

Second, the mystery as to what is was originally. Almost certainly a shop, at least in part, but the rest of the building, especially the long upper storey, does not look like an ordinary dwelling. Was there originally another function, perhaps associated with some local industry or institutional use?
