I’ve spent the past few weeks preparing a book of black and white photographs of the Mani for printing by Blurb, see various previous Mani posts. The first version arrived today and it looks OK. But OK is not at all good enough. Some of the pictures are not strong and there is some repetition that needs to be edited out. And there are some technical problems: a few pictures scanned from colour negatives are very grainy, a bit flat and look out of place (scans from B&W negs are much better (this posting an example)); the printing has not handled areas of fine detail well, giving a curiously granular effect (due to the choice of printing screen?); and the lane spacing in areas of text is inconsistent. Food for thought and problems to be solved.
