Edwin Smith is one of the great British architectural photographers of the 20th century. To those familiar with this work the inclusion of documentary photographs of fairs, circuses and miners dating from the mid to late 1930s in the main two monographs on him may come as a surprise. I have been exploring this part of Smith’s photography for an article to be published on the Weeping Ash web site, www.weepingash.co.uk. A first draft is done and I’m posting one of my fairground photographs in celebration.
