The Fens are all about space: the soaring skies, the huge fields, the far horizons and the lack of features in this underpopulated landscape. Where there are features they tend to both emphasise both distance and the flatness through the contrast they provide. Fenscape pictures tend to be about this sense of space.
Yet, sometimes there are features that challenge the space, the openness, features that embody closure. With that closure comes a sense of privacy, secrecy even. Features become enigmas, questions about form and function, about who and what. Maybe they are metaphors for the bigger enigma that the Fens represent to outsiders.
