Five Facets of Photography: Women in Photography – Germaine Krull

Tour Eiffel, Germaine Krull, c. 1928

Germaine Krull (1897 – 1985) was an avant-garde photographer, political activist, and hotel owner. Her nationality has been recorded as variously European, though she spent many years in Brazil, the Republic of the Congo, Thailand, and India. She is one of a number of early 20th-century female photographers who lead unconventional lives – she took part in the 1919 Spartacist uprising in Berlin.  Krull is best known for photographically-illustrated books such as her 1928 portfolio Métal, a series images of metal architecture.  She invented the photo-novel genre in 1931.  She managed the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok from 1946 to 1966.
