‘Visitors seem to have come [to Hastings] from about 1775 onwards, but architecturally the first event is PELHAM CRESCENT of 1824-8, by Joseph Kay, an enterprise of the first Earl of Chichester. The crescent rises as it curves, and its apex and climax is St Mary. A pity that houses of the crescent are not a storey lower. As it is the church are not helped by the houses.’ Typical Pevsner, never satisfied.
