But he\u2019s not impartial.&nbsp; He shows a controlled, ordered, utilitarian landscape, a social, historical and political landscape that humankind has appropriated from nature.&nbsp; The work reads as a polemic against the modern world in general and farming in particular.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think this is entirely right at a time when the natural world is discounted against growth.&nbsp; The introductory essay to <em>Reclaimed<\/em> by Isabelle Bonnet ends with a quote from Slavoj Zizek: \u2018The paradox is that it is much easier to imagine the end of life on earth than a much more modest change in capitalism\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-default\"><figure class=\"alignright size-medium\"><a class=\"highslide img_2\" href=\"http:\/\/brianhuman.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/North-Fen-Cottenham-23rd-April-2020-1.jpg\" onclick=\"return hs.expand(this)\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"http:\/\/brianhuman.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/North-Fen-Cottenham-23rd-April-2020-1-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-8660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/brianhuman.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/North-Fen-Cottenham-23rd-April-2020-1-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/brianhuman.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/North-Fen-Cottenham-23rd-April-2020-1-768x510.jpg 768w, https:\/\/brianhuman.co.uk\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/09\/North-Fen-Cottenham-23rd-April-2020-1.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>North Fen, Cottenham, April 2020<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, Hart\u2019s approach leads him to an appreciation of the visual qualities of the fenscape that is distinctly different from my own.\u00a0 This shows itself in two particular ways.\u00a0 First, the predominant placing of the horizon across the middle of the frame, which follows from Hart\u2019s concern for the <em>land<\/em> in landscape, the \u2018mud\u2019.\u00a0 I think one of the defining characteristics of the Fens is the dominance of the sky, &#8216;huge, oceangoing&#8217; as Ian Parker described it, which is how we experience it \u2013 we scan a greater expanse of sky than land when we raise our heads to look up.\u00a0 I most often put the horizon in the bottom third of the frame.\u00a0 Second, Hart sees a sombre, crepuscular land of flat skies where no skylarks rise up to sing on bright days, his vision is low key photographically.\u00a0 Yes, the Fens can be like this, but just as often the great skies are filled with light and towering skyscapes.\u00a0 The Fens are not devoid of chiaroscuro lighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I don\u2019t think there is a definitive vision of Fen landscape, a dominant gaze.&nbsp;
