Walking with the U3A group yesterday starting at the White Horse, Swavesey. The route took us along part of the Pathfinders Way, devised to perpetuate the name of the Royal Air Force Pathfinder Force (Group 8), the 43 mile route links the historic RAF Pathfinder stations at Wyton, Graveley, Oakington and Warboys. We did a mere 3.9 miles.
Beautiful sunny spring day. Hawthorn, cow parsley, cowslips and occasional bluebells out in the hedgerows; chiffchaff and willow warbler calling from among the leaves. Swallows and sand martins skittering around the sluice at the Ouse end of the Over Drain. Mallard, mute swan, grey heron and little egret along the Drain. A solitary buzzard wheeling overhead.
At Over walking along the edge of apple and pear orchards. Venerable trees, the remaining tended plantings of a once great top and soft growing industry around the villages of Over, Willingham, Cottenham and Histon.
