An Ending

Gannet, Porthlysgi Bay, Pembs, June 2023

I’ve been working on a project that I’ve variously called ‘Traces’, ‘Remains’ and ‘Endings’ – more of that another time.  Irrespective on the name, it includes photographs of the remains of animals that I’ve found when out walking.  I’ve no idea how they died, but I guess they include predation, collisions and various natural causes.  There is no uncertainty about the death of the gannet in this shocking picture.  It’s all too easy to picture this magnificent bird plunging spear-like into the sea off Grassholm after fish and impaling instead the rigid plastic screw ring, followed by a slow and agonising death from starvation.
