being you – David Runnacles

A new photo book from David Runnacles – being you, Cambridge photos 2022. He explains: ‘In no particular order: pictures from my Saturday afternoon rambles around Cambridge city centre.  April to October 2022.’  It’s up to his usual high standard.  He told me it’s to be his last (he said the same last year); I hope not.

I hope so too. Another remarkable collection.
100 images from a possible total of 31 days, assuming he made it every Saturday – that’s quite an impressive hit rate!

Yes, quite an achievement. Interesting to compare with some of the Titans of the past. For ‘The Americans’ Robert Frank took his family along with him for part of his series of road trips over the next two years, during which time he took 28,000 shots. Only 83 of those were finally selected by him for publication.

Honestly there were some pics that really stood out and could easily stand alongside some of the ‘titans of the past’ – Ray Jones, David, Hurn, Martin Parr, etc.
It’s his organisation of the frame that does it for me, coupled with that old ‘decisive moment’ – poetic.

Yes, you’re right; also his ability to use emphasise the light to create strong chiaroscuro effects. I often wonder what he would have achieved if he had stuck with it as a career – the potential was obviously there in the work he did around the time he was involved with the Darkroom. Then again, the eight books he’s produced in recent years are testament enough to his talent.
