Great Eastern House, Station Road, Cambridge fell to the demolition crew on a grey wet Wednesday.
Built in 1956-7 to designs by H. H. Powell, Chief Architect, BR Eastern Region, it was constructed by Gilbert-Ash Ltd at a cost of £85,256.
It’s interesting to reflect on what Cambridge New Architecture said in 1970: ‘Cambridge’s first example of the new industrialised methods of prefabricated construction’; ‘This is an important building, easily missed’; ‘The qualities of this building are in fact universal’; ‘The modular construction throughout….makes future expansion or modification easier’ (p.103-4).
