Shire Hall, Cambridge

Shire Hall, Cambridge, 9th January 2024

Workmen removed the Cambridgeshire County Council sign from outside the Shire Hall, Cambridge, today.  It was the final symbolic erasure of an era that ended formally when the new offices were opened at Alconbury in July 2022.  The Shire Hall was built in 1931-32 to designs by H. H. Dunn; the mansard storey by R. H. Crompton was added in 1957.  Pevsner describes it as ‘a large, indifferent yellow brick building with some classical details’.  The future of the building is uncertain after plans for its conversion to a hotel fell through in November.

PS I started my planning career in an office in the mansard storey in 1971.
