Arlington National Cemetery on the outskirts of Washington has no comparable focus in this country for honouring the military. Both the scale of the Cemetery and the large number of visitors, young and old, reflect the higher status accorded the military in the US compared with the UK.

This is a sad, beautiful and evocative shot.
Yes, its a very moving place – easy to generate platitudes, but it does make one realise the scale of the slaughter of past wars. Our generation is lucky to have missed that.
