Walking along Trinity Street today I saw that Arthur Shepherd is having a closing down sale. So another Cambridge institution, a trade name familiar across the generations, passes into oblivion. In the 60s and 70s its annual sale was a major retail event – high quality menswear available at affordable prices. Every year my friend John and his sister joined the queue in the early hours; she was detailed to grab any 20 shirts in his size, while he scooped up six suits. Some extraordinary tweeds and pinstripes appeared in the following weeks.
