I was sad to read recently of the death of Ed Barber on 29th January. Sean O’Hagan described him in The Guardian as: ‘A tireless advocate for thoughtful social documentary photography and a formally brilliant portraitist.’ I recall Ed giving a stimulating talk on portraiture for the Cambridge Darkroom, probably in the early 1980s. (Does anyone remember exactly when and where? 1982-83? I think the venue may have been Kettle’s Yard.) His view of photography chimed well with the ethos of the Darkroom at that time.
