What characterises the landscape of the Fens? Flatness; distant horizons; soaring skies; straight rivers, lodes and dykes, roads too; intense farming and precise arable fields. There is a sense of order and geometry. Most of the time. Beside the well-ordered cultivation, close to working farms, there is often neglect and the semi-dereliction of decaying buildings, abandoned machinery and the muddy churn of heavy vehicles. The photographs below were taken on my recent visit to Holm Fen.
