Five Facets of Photography – Ideas that Changed Photography: Photojournalism

Picture Post covers, Bert Hardy

Photojournalism is journalism that integrates images and text to tell a news story.  It is distinguished from other close branches of photography by having a rigid ethical framework which demands an honest but impartial approach that tells a story in strictly journalistic terms. In the US the photojournalistic approach was epitomised by Life (1937-72).  Britain had Picture Post (1938-57), which in the 1940s became significant in shaping the debate about the future of our society.

The founding of the photo agency Magnum in 1947 was central to the post war development of photojournalism, with photographers reporting on stories from around the world in extended photo essays.  Getting recognition of the importance of photographers and giving them credit for their work was central to Magnum’s mission.
