Five Facets of Photography – Travellers and Photography: Watson and Kaye

The People of India, Watson and Kaye

The People of India: a series of photographic illustrations, with descriptive letterpress, of the races and tribes of Hindustan, was published by the India Museum, London, 1868-1875.  It comprised eight volumes containing 450 images made by Watson and Kaye as part of the accumulation of colonial knowledge of arbitrarily constructed categories of native types.  Note the categorisation in this image: ‘Marauding Hill Tribe’.
