Stopped off at All Saints Landbeach, Cambs, on Tuesday to see the swift’s nests on the webcam. Young from three of the four nests have fledged; those in the remaining nest look close to fledging.
The swift is now on the Red List of Birds in the UK, we have lost over 50% in the last 25 years. The main reason is loss of nest sites, but fewer insects may also contribute. Against this trend, Landbeach swifts have increased from a handful of pairs 20 years ago to 66 pairs in 2021. There were 22 nest boxes occupied by swifts on 16th June 2023.
