Lot’s Wife

Lot’s Wife, Hamo Thornycroft, 1877-78

‘The sculpture depicts the biblical story of Lot’s wife, who turned into a pillar of salt when she looked back at Sodom and Gomorrah, two cities which represented sinful ways.  Thornycroft was one of the leading figures of the New Sculpture.  This movement breathed a fresh senses of energy, truth-to-nature and symbolism into representations of the body after a period characterised by the idealism of Neo-classicism.’ (Victoria and Albert Museum)
