This U3AC course continues to stimulate thoughts about links between poetry and the other arts, including photography. This week we looked at the work of American poet John Ashbury. His poem ‘The picture of Little J. A. in a prospect of flowers’. It contains two separate lines after after the first two stanzas:
‘In a far recess of summer
Monks are playing football.’
As far as the poem is concerned, this seems to do no more that ‘assert the materiality of language’. I was reminded of the photograph Seminary, Madrid, 1960, by Ramon Masats.
