Shingle Street 28 – Oxley Marshes

Oxley Marshes 1, Shingle Street, December 2019

Shingle Street doesn’t appear on any 18th century maps.  Where the hamlet now stands was a bleak, deserted, curve of coast facing the sun: on one side the sea and shifting shingle banks of Hollesley Bay; and on the other a stretch of marshland along the river and beyond it the Sandlings, heaths, poor sandy soil that gave the farmers only hard work for little return.
