Arbutus unedo is a small tree native to the Mediterranean region and western Europe. Its fruit resembles the strawberry, hence the common name strawberry tree. The fruit is edible, but considered unpalatable, thus unedo. When used it’s mostly in jam, marmalade, yogurt and alcoholic beverages, such as the Portuguese medronho, a type of strong brandy.
