Whenever I see someone alone at a cafe or restaurant table I’m reminded of Tom Paxton’s poignant 1968 song ‘Victoria Dines Alone’.
Victoria dines alone, she skips the potatoes / Victoria begins her meal with greens and tomatoes / Reading the newspaper carefully folded beside her / Hanging her coat by her table and letting it hide her / Victoria dines alone, her dress is old-fashioned / Victoria watches her weight, each meal is rationed…
This diner is clearly not old fashioned. I’ve no idea if she watches her weight. What has she ordered? Photo: Βανίλια bistro, Veikoy, Athens, June 2019.
