We are at that time of year when newspapers and broadcast media devote column inches and air time to litanies of those who have died in the past twelve months. The list in the Review section of today’s Observer records just one photographer, Larry Fink; Gina Lollobrigida is included, but rightly as an actor not a photographer. It might have included Elliott Erwitt, though his death had been acknowledged the previous week. The photographydatabase.org lists over forty photographers and artists working with photography who have died in 2023 – three names stand out for me as well as the above: John Benton Harris, Dorothy Bohm and Erwin Olaf.
