The assignment for this week was to submit two self-portraits, one formal/serious, one informal/funny. My two efforts below.
Formal: I prefer what I think of as environmental portraits, rather than formally posed head/three quarters shots. It sacrifices a detailed picture of what the person looks like, but can say more about the whole person: their environment; their interests; and can show them more relaxed. That’s what I’ve tried at achieve. Shot using natural light. My workspace rarely looks as tidy as this.
Fun Portrait: I’m not very fond of selfies: they are unflattering; and egotistical. In this photo I sought to poke fun at both the selfie and myself. The position of my head and the stare off camera reminds me unintentionally of the famous portrait of Francis Bacon by Bill Brandt. The picture was made by me standing with my back to a mirror.
