U3AC Photo Forum 2023-24 – Week 7

Joseph Nicephore Niepce, View from the window at Le Gras, 1826-7

Graham Wickens gave a presentation on Architectural Photography and Cityscapes, a genre going back to Nicephore Niepce and the birth of photography and running through the work of Berenice Abbott to the conceptual work of Hiroshi Sugimoto.

The range of subjects and approaches to them is endless.  Choose from cityscapes, individual buildings (domestic, ecclesiastical, commercial, industrial etc.) and details; and change the atmosphere by varying the time of day and weather.  Take advantage of reflections and use long exposures to introduce light trails.  Include people or not – they give a sense of scale.

Equipment: DSLR or phone; wide angle and telephoto lenses; tilt shift lenses (or post production processing to correct verticals); polarising filters; tripod; use of HDR to deal with extremes of exposure.  And if you feel the need, use of AI to create new worlds.
