According to “Joe’s Trippin’” there are 118 islands and 387 bridges in Venice. The Rialto is the grandest; the Accademia is the most tiring, but has the best views; the Scalzi in the newest; and the Bridge of Signs is the most overrated. Most of the remaining 383 are lost in anonymity. Anonymous, yet with an elegant, functional beauty that shapes the unique character of Venice. Of, course they don’t function if you happen to be in a wheelchair, are a struggle for parents with pushchairs and a workaday hazard for man handling delivery carts. Some have now been fitted with temporary (?) ramps built of scaffold poles and boards.
