What makes a great photograph?

This was a question put to Mark Haworth-Booth at his curator talk at the Stapleford Granary last Saturday (see previous post).  He replied that, ‘It works if it affects you’; and used the extremes of work by Ansel Adams and Robert Frank as examples of great photographs.
