Ravilious Recalled

Bartlow, Cambs, September 2022

A walk at Bartlow yesterday.  Starting at the Three Hills pub and heading south towards Ashdon, taking an anticlockwise loop back up to the village.  On the way we paused at a bridge over the old railway line. The sun and clouds shifting shadows across the stripped fields to the west brought to mind landscapes by Eric Ravilious. At the end: passing the increasingly overgrown three tumuli (from which the pub takes its name); enjoying the sun on a seat in St Mary’s churchyard; and lunch at the Hill Trees.

Beautiful landscape, one of those occasions where colour is essential. If you haven’t already, try and catch the recent film about Ravilious and his work – Eric Ravilious: Drawn to War (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt21085046/?ref_=tt_urv)

Thanks, Roy – one of those happy accidents of being in the right place at the right time.
Thanks also for the link to ‘Drawn to War’, I’ve been wanting to catch this for some time.
      Brian
